In order to start imagining it…

Why it is unique

Los Glaciares National Park covers an area full of climate and landscape variations, which are unique in the world.

From the high mountains to the Patagonian steppe, everything around it changes constantly: the heights in the Andes Chain of Mountains, always snowy, become hidden hills covered in typical southern woods as they lower; two of the biggest lakes in the continent have their source within the Park; and between them, on their left, we can find the Southern Continental Ice Platform, one of the biggest in the continent, apart from the Antarctic. Then, the steppe following the Chain of Mountains creates a special habitat for a great variety of mammals and birds, and it is hard to imagine the flora of this isolated place.

Its main attraction are glaciers, and each one of them is special. There are also many prehistoric traces in this almost uninhabited area, from rupestrian paintings to animal, human and vegetable fossiles.

Los Glaciares National Park is definitely a unique place in the world, and this is why, in 1981, UNESCO declared it 'Human Inheritance'.

Location:

The National Park covers approximately 6,000km2, located in the south-west of Santa Cruz province. It occupies the area formed by the sources of Argentino and Viedma Lakes, and a western part containing the Southern Continental Ice Platform.

Its western border coincides with the border to Chile between parallels 49*15' and 50*50' in the south, from Fitz Roy Mountain to Stokes Hill, containing most part of the Southern Continental Ice Platform and every glacier facing the east.
